Getting started
Signing in
Open chat.beta.kink.town and sign in with just your username and password. New members create their account first through an invitation link from a group leader. The first time you sign in, the app asks you to set up Secure Backup. Save the recovery key somewhere safe. Without it, a lost phone means lost message history.
Encryption
Every chat is end to end encrypted, always: group rooms, direct messages, and voice, video and screen share calls of any size. The server only sees who is in which room and when, never what is said. The first time you sign in it may take a moment to set up your encryption keys before you can send your first message.
Voice and video calls
If nobody can see or hear you in a call, your browser, network or VPN is probably blocking WebRTC. VPN browser extensions often have a "WebRTC leak protection" switch that needs to be off for calls to work. Trying another network is the quickest test.
Apps and clients
The chat runs on Matrix, an open standard, using the Element apps. Use chat.beta.kink.town in any browser, where it can also be installed as an app from the browser menu. On a phone, install Element X and sign in by scanning the QR code from the web app under Settings, Sessions, Link new device. This is a beta server while we test, so expect an occasional reset.
